StoryBrook Healing Arts

Holistic mind, body, and spirit approaches to vibrant health & resilient flourishing!

Hi, I’m Carol

As a Nurse Practitioner, Creative Wellness Weaver, and Trauma Transcender with 30 years in the medical field and extensive training in holistic healing modalities, I guide women in embodied wellness practices where we tend to our nervous systems, listen to our intuition, and follow a healing path that is personalized, somatic, and uniquely our own. I’m on the journey alongside you. Healing as I heal, learning as I lead, connecting, expanding, ever-evolving.

My Story

I am grateful for what I have in my life

An increased and embodied capacity for nervous system regulation.

A well of self-compassion and deep self-regard, even when I’m messy, imperfect, and utterly human. (Especially then).

A healthy dialogue with my inner critic who no longer runs the (internal) show.

Feeling fully resourced with tools and techniques I can use to soothe, support, and recalibrate when life gets challenging (which is often!).

It did not used to be this way.

I grew up feeling like I had to live a double life – not like the cool and benevolent “Mrs. Doubtfire”- more like the sinister and clandestine kind cultivated out of abuse. My childhood was complex and confusing. I got pregnant in high school, married my high school sweetheart, and we maneuvered a winding path of young parenthood, him with his issues, me with my internal residue from my childhood, our separation and divorce, reconciliation, and separation again. I didn’t have positive role models for how to take good care of myself, let alone my daughters. I had few tools to process the shame and guilt I carried from my perceived failures and the gaslighting I had encountered throughout my growing up and the relationships that followed. My inner critic was raging, my self-worth was abysmal, and I was struggling with severe depression, anxiety, and hopelessness.

Even at a young age, I was compelled by a desire to improve the world through healing.

In elementary school, I was tasked with writing an essay on who I wanted to be when I grew up. I intuitively knew that I wanted to be a neurosurgeon so I could, “rewire bad people’s brains.” Later, as I traveled my path of young parenthood, I quickly realized that I could not afford medical school. Instead, I enrolled in nursing school with a deepened desire to help others like me “rewire their brains” without invasive surgery.

I forged a unique approach, bridging science and spirit.

After working as a nurse for many years, I became disillusioned with the system, which did not give me the time or resources needed to effectively support others on their healing path. My own commitment to the life-long journey of healing brought me to expand my work as a nurse practitioner and propelled my exploration of creative healing modalities. I was able to weave powerful connections between my mental and physical wellbeing, engage somatic tools that helped release shame and guilt from my brain and body, move from subconscious into conscious awareness, and commit to practices that supported powerful mindset shifts and habit change.

I am in a lifelong process of healing and flourishing.

The ways I’ve been able to grow and evolve, to forgive myself, to nourish my body, and to root into purpose and presence have truly transformed my life.

I’m excited to share these tools and practices with you and support you in experiencing your own embodied healing and transformation.

I feel most alive and aligned when I am partnering with women through their own healing journeys. When I can serve as a channel for collective consciousness, supporting people to access their innate wisdom. When I am sitting with clients as they arrive at their own epiphanies and begin to implement radical and real changes in their habits that catalyze integrated body-mind healing.

It brings me immense fulfillment to witness women become aware of their own capacity and begin to trust their inner wisdom. Because when they do ((when you do — when I do — when we do)), everything changes.

Let’s partner on the healing path!

Guiding Values.

This work is based on a foundation of these values and principles:

Integrity & Resilience

We are doing the best we can with what we have been given. I believe that visionary, personalized healing paths rooted in integrity will enhance our capacity to fortify our resilience, mend deep embodied traumas, transcend life’s challenges, and create a flourishing future.

Intentional Relationships & (Inter)Connectedness

We do not heal in isolation. I know that we all deserve to flourish in health, wealth, love, joy, vitality, peace, and connection. I value the symbiosis of the personal and collective and my work serves to strengthen reciprocal relationships within our intellectual, spiritual, and social realms.

Optimal Holistic Health & Wellness

We each deserve to thrive, not just survive. Optimal health and wellness looks and feels different for each person, and the experiential and embodied experiences I provide nurture a personalized path of healing, growth, and transformation.

Remembering & (Re)Sourcing

We are powerful beyond measure if only we can remember. I am passionate about supporting clients to recognize their own strength, reconnect with their capacity, and honor their wisdom. Through our partnership, clients are emboldened to embrace their own vulnerability, master self-restoration of their nervous systems, practice brave self-trust, identify and live into their values, and rise strong through adversity (Brené Brown).

Collective Flourishing & Mutual Care

When you flourish, we all flourish. This work is rooted in a model of inclusive social justice that emphasizes collective flourishing, fosters a mindset of ethical abundance, and uplifts the importance of holistic mutual care and community reciprocity.

Why the Name StoryBrook Healing Arts

StoryBrook Healing Arts is named for the power of story (and our agency in writing and reclaiming our own narratives) and the calming yet mighty capacity of a brook (so different from a river or an ocean — slow, steady, and yet sovereign).

Healing Arts is a term that encompasses creative modalities such as bodywork, mindfulness, dance, and intuitive painting. It speaks to my approach of merging science and the art of healing in deeply creative, somatic, expressive, embodied, and personalized ways.

I believe that we each can claim poetic license in how we interpret our past storyline and create the stories of our future.

The name is also in appreciation of the fictional town of Storybrooke from a delightful TV series — Once Upon A Time. This imaginary place is home to characters from beloved fairy tales who are living in modern times. It symbolizes hope and optimism, the permission to play, our ability to rewrite familiar stories, and the invitation to embrace creativity and community as tools for healing.

About the Work

My Philosophy of Care: Moving away from emergency towards Emergence.

My approach weaves the science, art, and sacred spirit of advanced practice holistic nursing with somatic healing practices and modalities and Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) — understanding that our bodies and minds are connected at the cellular level, all of which foster a holistic approach to healing and wellness. Emergence occurs when a complex entity has properties or behaviors that its parts do not have on their own, and emerge only when they interact in a wider whole.

I support my clients to tune into their own inner wisdom, to trust that wisdom, and to allow it to guide the path we map for their care. We’ll practice tools for self-regulation and self-soothing, repair and restore equilibrium in the nervous system, and consciously transform or transcend suffering and dis-ease.

There is room for your goals and approach to shift and evolve as your needs and desires change. Our work together is responsive and emergent, with ample room for you to practice self-compassion, a shedding of shame, and to be held in a safe place to make mistakes, grow, and explore together.

Each healing partnership is personalized to the individual client — you. I draw from my vast toolbox of healing modalities to meet you where you are at and support you on your unique healing journey. I am trained in a multitude of modalities, and I bring this breadth of practice to our work. Tools and approaches we engage are rooted in trauma-informed, somatic (mind and body-oriented), expressive arts practices and modalities. Some examples are Wellness/Well-being Theory, Mindful Self-compassion and Stress Reduction, Mindset and Behavior Change theory and practices, Expressive Arts Therapy, Mindfulness Dancing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Internal Family Systems Theory, NeuroLinguistic Programming, and Hypnosis. Trauma-informed information gathering/therapeutic inquiry, Mindful Stress Reduction, and somatic nervous system regulation practices are incorporated into every session.
